The group has extensive expertise in all aspects of quantitative PET imaging, including modelling and kinetic analysis, both for the design and implementation of clinical and experimental studies. We are also internationally leading in atlas-based regional quantification and region-of-interest based analyses of MRI and PET studies (RA Heckemann), and we have been using PET and MRI joint analyses for over a decade. The availability of an integrated MRI-PET machine will enable us to pursue methodological work, e.g. in the integration of MRI and PET data for reconstruction and attenuation correction, and completely novel applications, e.g. the simultaneous assessment of blood flow and dopaminergic neurotransmission during epileptic seizures in real time.

Axe(s) de recherche

A nationally funded Research and Patient Care Network (RTRS), the Neurodis Foundation (Director: François Mauguière) was formed in 2007 with a mission to ensure the rapid translation of neuroscience results into clinical applications to benefit patients. The Foundation brings together the regional research and patient care resources of the Universities and University Hospitals of Lyon, Grenoble, St Etienne and Clermont-Ferrand, and, amongst other actions, funds a Chair of Excellence of Functional Neuroimaging (Project Leader: Alexander Hammers). The team headed by Alexander Hammers moved from Imperial College London in 2009, where it had been based at the Medical Research Council (MRC)’s Clinical Sciences Centre (MRC-CSC) as the “PET Epilepsy” group and rated 4/5 in the 2009 Quinquennial Review. Since the beginning of the last review period in 2004, with an average head count of ~2 clinician scientists/postdocs and ~1 PhD student, the team has produced 20 primary (first/last author) and 42 secondary PubMed-listed publications gathering over 1,000 citations, obtained approximately 1.5 M€ in direct grant funding, approximately 2.6 M€ of grant funding as co-applicants including ~1.1M€ specifically for Lyon’s planned MRI-PET platform as part of the CESAME Brain and Mental Health Institute project, and over 1 M€ in MRC core funding. The team retains strong links with the PET epilepsy lab at Imperial College London, the PET Modelling group at the MRC-CSC (FE Turkheimer), the MRI Physics and Engineering group (JV Hajnal) and the Department of Computing (D Rueckert), with several students and postdocs co-supervised, and regular visits. We have multiple international PET and/or MRI collaborations including as part of the European Union’s FP7 programme (EURIPIDES).
