VIsualsonics is a company that has developed a technology for 2D and 3D co-registration of high-frequency US and photoacoustics in real-time (US-PA). The in vivo imaging technology has already shown great potential in deep-tissue (2-3 cm) imaging and tumour detection with the resolution of optical imaging (30-40μm) in a non-invasive approach. VSI will further develop and optimize this technology for imaging molecular targets relevant in JIA. With this technology it would be possible for the first time to introduce molecular imaging ideally suited for routine outpatient care. By combination with US, a molecular imaging tool widely available at the point of care, i.e. in clinical practice, can be established, which is not feasible with MRI or nuclear medicine technologies.
VisualSonics is the world leader in real time, in vivo, high-resolution micro imaging systems designed specifically for preclinical research in numerous fields, including Cardiovascular, Cancer, Neurobiology and Developmental biology. The VEVO® high frequency ultrasound technology and Photoacoustics technology enables in vivo, real-time, high resolution visualization and quantification of anatomical, functional and molecular targets, hemodynamics, therapeutic interventions etc. A sucessful adaption of our technology to image Juvenile idiopathic arthritis will facilitate the improved diagonosis and treatment. With the current effort of VSI in translational medicine and the focus on moving the experience from the preclinical studies into the clinic a pilot project like MIRACLE is an important approach to adapt the current technology to diagnose and treat patients.
